January 2012
First, let me introduce myself. I was born on a farm in central Florida. One day some homeless people came by and picked up my sister and me. The homeless people did not have a place to live, no money to feed us, and it was cold – March, 2009. The homeless guy then called his mother who lived in Bunnell Florida. She took pity on me and placed an ad on Craigslist. This is the story Mom told me anyway so to the best of my knowledge it is true. The rest is history and that is how I found my Dad and Mom.
People always ask Dad and Mom if I am either a Labradoodle or Portuguese Water Dog. I am neither. They had me stuck with needle and took a test, then told me I am 50 % poodle, 25 % australian cattle dog and 25 % unknown. Dad told me I am a one of a kind stroodle and I like that best.
Mom's version of how they found me:
On Wednesday, 3-4-09, I was waiting for Jon to fly back to Florida from a meeting in Worcester. The plan was for him to return, then for us to head south on Sundance for about 6 weeks. Well, Wed. morning I was caroosing Craigslist.com and I had been doing for about 4 months. We have been missing our beloved Cabo who passed away on 9-5-08. It has been a terrible void in our lives. I have been visiting shelters, watching ads, trusting that when the right dog came along I would know it. As of last weekend, I had given up on getting a new dog until after the boat trip, but then I saw the ad. We had decided that based on our lifestyle, of car travel, hotel stays, walks and boat travel, that our safest bet would be a puppy that we could train. We decided on a 25 – 35 pound, mix breed preferably with some poodle to help with shedding, and of course black.
Well, then I saw the ad, it had just been posted. It read that there were two free puppies that were literally living out in the cold, and needed homes. The ad said that there was one male and one female, 8 – 9 weeks old, border collie/poodle mix, all black. I called with the thought that they would probably be gone, but alas, the woman, Donna explained the following to me: Her son and his wife were homeless. She had their three children living with her. Donna said that her son had called her and told her that he and his wife had seen a sign by the side of the road at a farm for free puppies. Donna said her son told her that the owner said the puppies were a poodle/ border collie mix, and were about 8 – 9 weeks old. So, the homeless people ended up taking a male and female. Florida has had a cold spell, low 30’s, so the couple found someone’s garage to live in, but the puppies were not allowed in. The puppies were staying outside, in the freezing weather. Donna said that puppies had no shots, but had been the original owners said that they had been dewormed.
I called Jon, and he said to go check the puppy out, and that if I liked it, he would go over later in the day when he returned from his trip. I called Donna back. She said she would call her son to bring the male puppy over, and for me to come over in about ½ hour. Before I left, I called the local vet. I asked that if we decided to get the puppy, could I get him in for an appointment, and did they think it would be a problem to bring him on a boat for 6 weeks. They said no problem to the boat, and scheduled a tentative appointment for us yesterday AM at 9:20. I went to meet the puppy. He was Donna’s house. The house was a small house, and I was met by two toddlers, a huge Doberman Pincher, a pitbull and a small yorkie dog. Donna answered the door holding an infant who was 7 months old, and only weighed 28 pounds due to failure to thrive. Then I saw him. He was sitting on the floor cowering by a couch. I sat on the couch and he walked over to me and put his head on my shoe. It was a done deal. While I was there, Donna got two phone calls inquiring about the puppies. She told me her phone had been ringing off the hook. When I asked if I could bring Jon over later, she told me that it was important for her to give the puppy away immediately because due to her full house, she could not keep him, and did not think he could go on living outdoors. She said that I had to commit then, or she would give him to someone else. She did keep him long enough for me to run to the store and fill a cart with puppy supplies, then puppy and I came home to wait for Jon to meet his big surprise.
The first thing I did when we arrived home was give puppy a bath. He was covered with dirt, dried feces and his eyes were all gooey. I must say, he cleaned up great. We then went out and he met our neighbors Ken and Beth, and 2 of his new playmates, Pumpkin a small poodle, and Brandy a standard poodle. I noted that when he was running around, his left leg seemed to bow in a bit, I hoped it was just puppyhood.
Jon arrived home around 5:00 PM, instant love for him. Meanwhile, I had gotten a severe case of new puppy regret. I was thinking I was crazy to get a puppy. How would we housebreak him if he was on a boat. What if he stayed up all night, hated the boat, cried and howled. This boat trip was supposed to be a very relaxing trip, I had now singlehandedly made it into a stress filled venture. Having a new puppy is stressful enough. Now, we have a new puppy, and all the usual boat stuff to think about. I told Jon that I thought I had made a BIG mistake, and that I should take the puppy back. He somewhat talked me off of the ledge, and we decided that we would call puppy, Crew, due his new role on the boat.
Our first evening was a great one. Crew got his first collar, and after several attempts to “scratch” if off, he quickly adjusted. Next was the leash, and he took his first walk on the leash like a natural. Potty – training – ugghhh……… First night, one accident, everything else was outside on the grass followed by lots of “that a boy – good boy etc……” One big oh no, was everything, I mean everything was going into his mouth. He also gets his teeth on you with a little too much pressure and his teeth are sharp. He also is crying a bit, but this is his first day away form his sister, so I suppose there is a bit of separation anxiety for him. Fast approaching, was my dread of bedtime, and would we be up all night with a crying puppy. At 10;00 PM we went into the bedroom, opened the crate door , threw some treats in, Crew jumped in, we shut the door. He cried for about five minutes. It felt like an hour, but then silence. I barely slept listening for signs Crew needed to go out. I kept waiting to jump up and take Crew out because I knew a little puppy bladder would not last more than 3 -4 hours. Finally at 6:00 AM, and still not a peep from Crew, I feared he may be dead. I decided to get up and take him out. I opened the crate door and he bounded right out, we went outside, and he peed like a champ.
Back to me, Crew……..
So, now I am three years old and quite a well travelled guy. I weigh about 50 pounds and everyone tells me I am very handsome. I am single if you know any cute girls who are into playing ball and rolling in really stinky smelly stuff. Alot of my pals ask me where I have been, what did I do and what places did I like best. I do get kind of bored sometimes just laying around, so I decided to write my own memoirs, and develop a rating system for all of the places I stay so I can tell my pals where they should stay when they travel with their Dad’s and Mom’s. I think I will use a rating system which I personally have developed called the “wag” rating. It will be one to five wags, with five wags being the bestest rating ever. I will start with this trip because I have laredy been to four marinas. I am not real good with dates, but they will be the best I can do based on what I hear Dad and Mom saying the date is.
3-24-12 New Smyrna Marina – 4 wags
This place has floating docks so it is easy for me to get off and back on the boat. The dockmaster was very nice and let me go in to his office. There is restaurant, the Dolphin View right next door and I got to out to dinner with Dad and Mom there. The waitress did not bring me any food and I wish she did because the fish sandwiches smelled really good, but she did bring me a big bowl of water. After dinner, Mom and Dad took my leash off and let me run around a bit in a park right across the street. If you are the kind of dog that runs away, I don’t think your parents should take your leash off, but if you are good like me and like nothing better that being right next to your parents, it will be good for you. It is also a nice to walk around in town with your leash on because it is quiet and people are very friendly.
3-25-12 Cocoa Village Marina – 4 wags
This place had fixed wood docks that were kind of high and made it tough for me to get off and on the boat, but I am pretty agile if I do say so myself and was able to manage. We were at the very end of the dock so it was kind of a long walk when I really had to go if you know what I mean. Once off the dock there are several areas to do what you have to do, but here was no where my parents would let me have my leash off. There are lots of shops and restaurants in town which is a nice walk on your leash. Not that I would know, but I heard Mom saying there were lots of great restaurants in town. I did not get to go, but I also heard my Mom telling Dad they should have brought me to dinner at Murdocks because I could have sat with them at an outside table on the sidewalk.
3-26-12 Vero Beach Marina – 5 big wags
This is one of my personal favorites. It is easy for me to get off and on the boat. Everyone is really nice and they keep a bowl of cold water at the dockmaster’s office. The very best part of this place is they have a dog park bigger than I have ever seen ! You can run around at the park without your leash and your Dad can throw your ball a mile away and you can run, run, run !! My parents like the restaurant that is short walk away but they told me I could not go. It is a nice quiet area great for napping and long walks - I just love this place and have stayed here several times – each time I just love it !!
3-27-12
Sunset Bay Marina – Stuart - 4 wags
This place is about 8 miles up the St. Lucie river off of the ICW and it is pretty nice. They have floating docks so it is easy for me to get off and on the boat. The only problem is we were at the end of a very very long dock and sometimes I had to stop and pee on people’s bicycles and lines while I was trying to hurry to get up on land, it would have been nicer to be closer but they said this was the only slip they had. They don’t have the best walking places right at the marina. Last night I had already done what I had to do, I was just walking on my leash nicely minding my own business on the sidewalk when some mean guy in a house yelled at me and told me the dog area was across the street. Well, my Mom did not like that, but she has class so she looked the guy right in the eye, thanked him for the information, and we just kept right on walking on the sidewalk. I was still mad though so when my Mom was not looking I gave that guy the tail. There is a restaurant right at the Marina where I can sit outside at the Tiki bar, and couple of more in town. I would give this 5 wags if we were closer to the land and if there was a place I could run around because we are here for three nights and I have lots of energy!

1-30-12 – Lighthouse Point Yacht Club – 4 1/2 wags
The only downside to this marina is that it is not floating docks and it is about a three foot tide, so it is a little tricky for me to get off and on the boat. Otherwise – this place is a dog’s dream !! There is lots of nice grass and they let you walk on the grass. When you do your business, they don’t mind – they even give you the bags to pick up with. It is very pretty here and the assistant dock master is very nice and told me I was a nice boy (which I already knew but it is always nice to hear !!)
1-31-12 – Crandon Park Marina – 0 wags !!!!
This has gone from my favorite marina to worst one ever. Now I have been coming to this marina my whole life. My Mom and Dad have always walked around with me, played ball with me, and take me to the beach at night to watch the sunset. All of a sudden this year, I got off of the boat, my Mom was walking me on my leash, and this guy came and told me there were not pets allowed. My mom told him I have come every year, but he said I was not allowed. My Mom had to walk me back through this crabby grass, and I got burrs embedded in my paws, my face, my tail and even my ears. When we got back on the boat, my Mom had to comb me with a fine tooth comb for about 30 minutes – and I HATE to be combed OW !!!! Since I am dog non gratis – I will never return and neither will my Mom and Dad because there are lot so things they don’t like about it either !

Banana Bay Resort
This is my very favoritist place on earth. I have been coming here since I was about 3 months old. I have alot of friends here. I can go swimming if I want to, but as hard as I try I just don’t that walking on the water thing and I sink, so I am not crazy about swimming.the other great thing is if I walk around and sit when someone tells me, I get cookies. As long as I behave and do not kick dirt on people, and don’t run out on the road, I can walk around with my leash off. My favorite restaurant is here too – Hurricanes – I can eat there with Mom and Dad on the back porch – and I always use my best manners. This year a wonderful thing has happened, there is a girl here , a very cute beagle and I like her because she runs around and I chase her. She is fun, but she does not let me catch her so I am going to practice running faster so I can catch her !! I will have my Mom take a picture soon and I will post it so you can see her…….

Anchorage Marina – Key Largo
I was so sad to leave Banana bay this morning. I figured out the greatest thing this year. When you see someone you just walk up to them, put your nose to their pocket just about between their legs, and they pull out a cookie and give it you. I discovered you should not do this to everyone though because if they do not have cookies in their pockets, they think you are weird. The good news is I will be leaving the whack job behind who my mom brought me to for a haircut who made me look like a poodle ! Molly came to say good bye to me – we kissed, then wagged good bye. Molly and I have a secret plan because I told her how to get to my house in Palm Coast. I told just to get in the boat and keep going and going till about 4,000 bridges, then when she sees the guy at his boat, out sitting on the dock fishing by a big bridge, that’s where you turn. I told her then go till almost the road then turn, then she will see my waiting for her on my dock. I will take her to dogtails, then we can run around and she can chase me, then I’ll chase her. I told her she can come to my other house too, but that I am not sure how many bridges it is , probably about 10,000 and that’s a lot to count, especially if you are napping and stuff because you probably will miss some. We are at the Anchorage Marina now, I like it here, but it is a bit tough for me to get off and on the boat because they are not floating docks. You also have to wear your leash all of time. I use to run across the road, but last year we saw an eight foot crocodile swim by our boat, and figured out that must mean what all the warning signs are about when they tell you to watch out for the crocodiles. My mom was like, “Oh Crew – you can’t run around because the crocodiles may get you !’ I told her I could take one with no problem but she is all nervous. This is also the place where I had to chase the pirate boat off once – I am not kidding about this- read my mom’s blog – she was scared to death but I took care of business. It actually is pretty dangerous all and all, but I am no stranger to danger, Danger is my middle name !

Bahia Mar Marina – Ft Lauderdale - 5 wags
This get my highest ratings because it fits all of my puppy wish list. 1) Floating docks – this makes it real easy for me to get off and on the boat. 2) It’s not a long walk to get to a place to do my business. 3) They like dogs here and you can go in to the office and they will give you a treat. 4) We are right across the street and I love the smell of salt air almost as much as I love the smell of something good on the grill. 5) After business hours when all of the cars have left, there is a great big parking lot where I can chase my ball or play a game of Get Mom – Get Dad. Get Mom – Get Dad is my favorite game. My mom stands at one end of the parking lot, my dad at the other. I have sit still and wait with my dad till he yells out “get Mom !” then I run at about 100 MPH till I get to mom. Once I get to mom I have to sit real still and wait till she yells “get Dad” then I run, run, run to the other end of the parking to dad. I do this about 400 times until I can’t pick my tongue up from the pavement anymore. There is also a “Secret” park here with paths and benches – I think it must be like the Amazon, but I have not been not the Amazon yet. The only negative here is that my mom always calls for dock hand, they say they will be at our slip when we arrive, but they are never there. My mom then has to jump off the boat while it is moving. It just cracks me up when she does it because she jumps off of the boat, gets the ropes all tangled, panics, then starts talking in a foreign language. I told her I could just gracefully leap off of the boat, then hold the rope till my dad gets down, but she was like, “Oh Crew – you may break a tooth.” She forgets that I am the champion of tug a war and our 500 foot boat would be no challenge for me.

Lake Park Marina – Lake Park – 5 wags
My mom picks out the best places ! They have floating docks, lost of grassy areas, it is quiet, and there are nice places to sit down by the water and watch the boats go by. Mom was really happy because they also come and help you when you arrive. Some guy name RJ came over and got to go out to eat with my mom and dad. They were talking about a place that has hamburgers, and boy oh boy, do I love hamburgers ! OK, I have never really had a hamburger because my mom will not let me eat any human food or anything good. I get this bowl full of dry crunchy stuff that tastes like sticks. Well, not sticks, because I like sticks, but if you can think of something awful tasting, that is what it tastes like. My mom is so proud of me and tells everyone that I am such a good boy because I free feed and don’t gobble my food down all at one. Really, are you kidding me? Who could ever gobble that stuff down ? It takes courage and about 24 hours to get one bowl down. So, anyway, you can imagine that I was not to happy about ol’ MR RJ something special just waltzing in here like he knew my mom and dad, then going out for a hamburger – geez…. (PS – they told me that RJ could throw ball but he did not even dare throw the ball for me because he knew it would not get it by me – MR. Crewster to him !)

Vero Beach Marina – 5 wags still…..
I don’t always remember things, so I could barely stop wagging my tail when mom reminded me we were coming to Vero today – yippee!!!!!! I could not wait to get off of the boat and go to the office where they have bowl of water waiting for me right next to the bubbler. Then it is off to the park where I can run, run, run till my dad gets tiered of throwing the ball. My mom then throws the ball, but it does not go very far, so it is not much fun – mom is better at giving good rubs than throwing the ball. Everyone I saw today asked what kind of dog I am. I am thinking, why I am handsome, loyal, smart, loving, and heck of a ball player, when all of my sudden my mom says, he is 50 % poodle, 25 % Australian cattle dog, and 25% non swimmer. She thinks she is so funny, ha, ha, ha, that’s a good one mom – no, I just roll my eyes. I don’t like her telling everyone I am 50 % poodle. Now I don’t have anything against poodles, some of my best friends are poodles, but I think she can leave out the parts about being a non swimmer and the poodle. I think being 100 % Australian cattle dog is very cool, so that’s what I am think I am. I have been practicing my Australian accent bark. Instead of going “woof” in one syllable , I make two syllables so it sounds more like “wa-oof” It is a really great accent. It is so good to be me !

Titusville Marina – 4 wags
I like this marina a lot once I get off of the boat. Getting off of the boat is a bit dicey because they are not floating docks and I have to squeeze under the rail, then bend up to jump off. We got here and I got to do a lot of running, then I drank a lot of water. After I drank all of the water, mom told me I better pee a lot right then and there, because it was my last time off of the boat for the night. Well, I had just drank half of Lake Michigan, the least she could have done was let me know the big news before hand. Anyway, I am so excited because tomorrow I go home. I have not been home in about 35 years. I can’t wait to just lounge around the pool, tell all my friends Brandy, Pumpkin, Pepper and Bella about my trip. The only problem is I will have to go back to work guarding the house and that is a very big job. We have a school bus, UPS, Mailman, garbage collectors, and that is all before 9:00 AM ! I have to bark and alert my parents everytime I see a person or vehicle, and believe me, by the end of the day I am ready for bed ! You can bet I will be back with my blog the next time I go Crewsing – so until then, keep wagging !

Palm Cove Marina – 3 wags
Well I was just back in Palm Coast getting my territory remarked when my parents sent me to the sitters. I got home Thurs. and there was allot of stuff going on the boat. My parents don’t tell me all the details because I get a bad case of wag fever when I get excited, and I get excited about going on the boat. Now I have mentioned that I have been boating my whole life. I have heard from some of my pals that the water road went passed St Augustine but I did not really believe them. You can imagine my shock when I learned the water road does not only go to Marathon, but it also does really go another way, so all of this is new territory for me. We got up this AM and I learned today was the day – yippee !! Our boat went so fast the hair on my ears was moving a little bit. We got to the marina before time for my dinner. They have floating docks here which is plus, but no place for me to really run around so I am not thrilled about that. The people are really nice and they helped us with the ropes so I did not have to jump off and pull the boat in myself, - I am always relieved by that. My mom said tomorrow we are going to someplace I have never been, I forget the name of it, but I think it is a country or something like that.
4-14-13 – Saturday – 5 wags
Fernandina Harbor Marina
Were here, were here !!!!! We went so fast today that the hair on my tail was moving a little bit – it was teeth clenching, white paw, eyes squinting speed - over 9 knots one time !! The minute we arrived I just knew this was going to be a great place because I saw my pal Buddy on his boat just a boat away. I was like, “Hey Buddy – where are we ?” Buddy was like, “I don’t know but they have the big “G”s here - grass and girls – we are in luck !” It took about ten hours for my parents to get the boat all ready , then finally we got to check out the lay of the land. I went to the grassy spot and played ball with Paige – she is one of my friend’s from Palm Coast. I also got to go in the Dock Office. They had shelves in there with all this food on them right at my nose level just begging to be gobbled but my Mom can read my mind and she gave me that “Don’t even think about it mister “ look – I hate that look ! Well, I still just love it here – there is a huge city you can walk around in – I think it must be like New York City. I have made some new friends already. The only thing I don’t like is there are pickers in the grass, and I hate pickers because my mom then gets that comb to comb them out and it hurts !! I did get even with my mom though because one of the pickers came off on the carpet and boat and when my mom steeped on it, she was dancing around on one foot. I thought it was one of the funniest things I had ever seen – but then she got all crazy on me and that comb out again – OW !

Sunday 4-15-12
Just another great day. You will you not believe this but I have met back up with a girl from my past, Beecha. I am still loyal to my Molly if she is reading this, but boy oh boy, that Beecha does make my tail wag, and my tongue hang down to my knees ! My dad was catching all the boats ropes today and pulling the boats in – he is Marmaduke he is so big and strong !! I am going to have a great week here, so if you are out crewsing with your mom and dad – I highly suggest that you stay here at the Fernandina Marina. I don’t think we are going to stay at a marina on our way home, so this will be my last crewsing report for awhile, so till next time –keep wagging !
