Trawlers Rock
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

Tempo House Hotel. Zanzibar

We left the lodge around 10::00, got in some final wildlife TV, stopped at a large gift shop, then arrived at the airport around 1:30. We had an uneventful flight to Zanzibar, met our driver and arrived at the hotel about 6:00 pm. We have a large suite right on the beach. It is really pretty. We had cocktails and were treated to a beautiful sunset. We decided to eat dinner at the hotel, then off to bed !

Tempo House

Man, it is hot here !!  Yo just step outside and you are drenched ! We went on about a five hour walking tour with lunch stop in old town which is a world UNESCO site. The most interesting part of the history was the major slave trade conducted by Arabs. Slavery was eventually outlawed aftervStanley Livingston engaged England to assist, but slaves were still traded illegally hence the saying, black market.  We had cocktails on our patio watching the sunset, and we were entered by a large group of young men performing various gymnastic feats on the beach.  Interestingly, the beach was full of local men, but no women. We were told as Zanzibar is mainly Muslim, the women are not allowed to swim at the beach. We ventured back out for dinner, I think it was still over 90 at 8:00 at night. Had a good dinner, then called it a night.

Jambiani Villas

Mr Orthman picked us up At 10:00 and drove about an hour to the east coast of Zanzibar to a small village called Jambiani. We have a rented a 3 bedroom ocean front villa with a great big pool !  We arrived around noon, ate lunch, spent afternoon at pool. We walked next door to the Blue Oyster for dinner. Everything is very sloooooooow. It took us over two hours to eat dinner. We can walk the beach when the tide is out, but if you have to walk through the village when the tide is in. The tide is amazing here. It goes out for what looks like a mile and you can walk out. But when it is in, you walk out and it is up to your head in about ten feet. It is blazing hot, even the villa does not completely cool down. Tommorrow we are planning on a r and r day.

Today we walked around the village, read, swam, I got a massage, and we arranged for a rental car for the next two days. This really a third world feel.We took a taxi to dinner.

Jambiani

Today we were able to get our car but had a delay getting out after the only ATM on this side of the Island ate Michaels Card. We finally set out about noon. We ate lunch at The Rock. We then visited the Seaweed center, followed by a walking tour of The Jobanzi Forest. They have the only Columbus monkeys in the world. The monkeys are interesting because they do not have thumbs, only 4 digits. It was a 107 humid degrees today. By the time we got, the heat had wiped us out so we went swimming and ate peanuts and cheese and crackers for dinner. Tomorrow we plan on exploring the north end of the island.

Jambiani

We took to road today and drove a circle of the upper third of the island. The main mode of transport is bicycle so at least there is not a lot of  car traffic, but there is livestock, people walking and bikes everywhere. The landscape in the north west was similar to where we are, however the northeast coast seemed a little greener and more farming. The island is sorrounded by beaitiful water and beaches, but most of the structure is crumbling, and there is trash everywhere. We got back around 5, had our last sundowners on our balcony, then walked down the beach for pizza. This am I spoke to the manager about an air conditioning issue we had. We were suppose to check out at 10:00 am, but he moved us to another villa, and provided us with lunch which we were thrilled about because we were not getting picked up till 2:00 and once again it is literally broiling out. We spent he day relaxing, I swam in the ocean, the first time in the Indian Ocean for me, and I chilled in the pool. We arrived at the airport two hours early which was good because the security line which was outside was about an hour long. When we finally got to the check in, they told us our 5:00 flight left at 3:40. After some panic, they got us on the 6:00 pm flight. We have a long travel journey. We leave Adar Salem at minight, arrive in Amsterdam tomorrow Am, the fly to Atlanta, then to Jacksonville. Our total travel time will be about 32 hours. Jon has said no more third world travel for him, so we will see.........
